Every creative process is born from an uncomfortable place — an unresolved reference, a problem the client couldn’t name, a sketch that still won’t close. The part that matters lives in that initial discomfort: conception. The insight, the direction, the first form. None of it comes from a prompt. It comes from years of looking at good work, years of looking at bad work, and the ability to tell one from the other in three seconds.
AI comes after. Refinement, versioning, repetition, variation, visual hypothesis-testing at a scale no agency can sustain on its own. When the operator has repertoire, AI becomes a multiplier — delivering twenty paths where two used to fit, and human judgment cuts eighteen. When the operator has no repertoire, AI delivers at their level. That’s why the market’s average aesthetic is dropping: access went up, the foundation didn’t follow.
The real risk isn’t the machine creating in place of the creator. It’s the creator stopping creating and switching to just selecting. Anyone who outsources conception delivers poor work — well-finished, symmetrical, technically correct, and soulless. AI is a tool. What drives is repertoire. Inverting that order is comfortable, fast and cheap. It’s also the shortest path to becoming like everyone else.
